Fitness Types

It is important to know your fitness type before starting on your journey. Exercise or purposeful movement is the only way to place your body into a caloric deficit. Whether gardening, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking farther away in a parking lot, or going for a run or doing a CrossFit or Hyrox workout, all exercise modalities count. The frequency, duration, and intensity are what control the amount of caloric deficit achieved.

Note: you may start in one type, but end the program in another. The initial fitness typing is not written in stone.

1-5, 1 = Fitness freak to 5 = Sedentary

5 = Sedentary; this person does not like exercise in any form.  Walking is a chore.  They have a dog, but do not walk it.  Their homes tend to be unkempt.  Their clothes are ill-fitting.  There is a general lack of personal respect for their being.  The thought of doing anything remotely strenuous gives them anxiety. They tend to watch life go by instead of participating.  This could be due to personal trauma or general laziness, but tends to be more towards hiding themselves to avoid being hurt physically and/or mentally.  Even if they face physical hardship, they will rarely make a change due to the difficulty of facing their fears.

4 = The Complainer; this person will exercise, but will do anything to avoid it.  They complain as they are participating in any activity.

3 = The French person; this person loves exercise when they are doing it and doing well at it, but could care less when they are not participating. They are generally fit, but may carry an extra few pounds as their weight fluctuates as their activity level does the same.  This person enjoys the outdoors, climbing, or biking to exercise classes or the gym.  They will do exercise classes or the gym if they have an accountability partner.

2 = The Scheduler/Checklist; this person, whether as a child or adult, was shown how to exercise, liked how it made them feel, and has incorporated exercise into their daily routine like brushing their teeth or eating.  They are willing to try new forms of exercise as long as they get their thirty to ninety minutes completed each day.

1 = The Fitness Freak; this person could not picture their life not being active.  They were involved in sports or had physical fitness modeled for them at a young age and will exercise until the day they die.  They compete in 5k’s to ultramarathons, triathlons, or CrossFit/Hyrox.  If they live near water, they will paddleboard or surf on a weekly basis.  When Thanksgiving approaches, they sign up for the local Turkey trot to test their fitness rather than complete it for fun.  If they are injured or previously were, it is not unusual for them to train through the injury, often against medical advice.  They rarely have trouble with their weight because they are always moving.
